Birdhouse City

Pull out a paint brush and leave your mark on our birdhouse tree.

We purchased unfinished birdhouses at our local dollar store and invite our visitors to add their colorful statement to our tree of birdhouses.  No better way to remember the visitors that have stopped by the lake!

We have a colorful collection of friends and family!

First Flight

Mom and dad encourage their little one to fly.

Taking flight for the first time

We are finally settled in at the lake house for the summer.  This year we have a new family on the lake.  A family of sparrows moved in this spring.  A mom, dad and five baby sparrows made their home in the bird house while we were away.  We had the amazing opportunity to watch them take their first flight last week.  The first baby was brave and quickly took flight from the house with mom and dad proudly watching from the nearby tree.  The second baby was much more timid.  It kept peeking out of the house and looking out, creeping further and further out only to retreat back in after some thought.  The parents flew by encouraging their youngster to give it a try but the little one refused to budge from the home.  After about half an hour the little one finally took flight and glided elegantly across the lake.  The parents soared alongside their little one with an obvious sense of pride.

As I watched the birds it struck me how similar my own life is to the birds, as I watch my children grow and take flight.  My oldest son is leaving our home this year heading off to college.  I could relate to the sparrows pride as they watched their baby fly.
